Our journey took us to Jay's home town, Lumberton, NC, for a get-together with a bunch
of his high school classmates.  We took a day trip to Southport, NC, where Jay's brother,
Chuck, spent his last years...partly for nostalgia, and partly because Sherry loves riding
that ferry from Southport to Wilmington.  Needless to say, we took the back roads.
By the time we got there, the cotton had
already been harvested.  This was near Lake
Waccamaw, NC.
Did we mentioned that it rained all that
morning, as we were driving to the coast?
So, we got ready to drive
onto the ferry boat.  Had to
pass the reading test first.
And, if you break the rules, no water
skiing.  They're strict!
Not all passengers pay full fare.  Some
preferred their own transportation.
Did we mention it rained?
GESUNDHEIT!  Dixie parked on the
front row.  Didn't want her to take a
dip, especially with us in her.
Hey, who's driving this thing anyway?
(right) Looking farther back, toward
Bald Head Island, NC, where "Weekend
at Bernie's" was filmed.
It's about a 45 minute ride across the Cape Fear River, where it empties
into the Atlantic Ocean.  You'll see all kinds of boats and ships, from
private craft, to oyster boats, to fishing boats, such as the "Josey
Wales,", to huge ocean going cargo ships.
Arriving at the Wilmington side of
the Cape Fear, at Fort Fisher, and
just minutes away from the ocean.
Some turkeys just don't pay
any attention to the signs!
On our last day in Lumberton, we went to a get-together of some of Jay's classmates.  Just
outside the Methodist Church where we met, we found this beautiful holly bush and this
warning sign.  Did they remember us, after all these years?
It's so hard to believe it's been so many years.
Most of us are still around, but 19 of us have
passed on.
Jimmy Williams, our class president, talked about
those dear friends, as we all remembered them.
It was a wonderful time.  The fellowship was warm, and so was the food.  We
had eats and music and memories.  Jay says he was the envy of all the guys
there, because he had Sherry and hair.  We had to leave earlier than we'd have
liked, but it was a long drive home.  Such great friends.  God Bless them all,
until we meet again.
