Saturday, August 14, and a pleasant drive to Marshfield to see and enjoy our favorite
Bluegrass band, The Gibson Brothers. First, late lunch at El Mezcal for some delightful
Mexican food. A mob of us. The Gibson Brothers are way down toward the far end of
the table. Look at that waiter! Better balance than a crooked accountant.
Any resemblance between
the wood carving above and
the bass player below had
better be kept to yourself.
The concert was held in the Chestnut Avenue Center for the arts, this beautiful old
church with remarkable acoustics and cushioned pews. It was a tad warm (all
right, it was HOT),but nobody seemed to care.
Mary, singing and picking with
her constant companion.
Our friends, "Forest Ridge", were the opening act. It was hot in the auditorium, so they bottomed out in the basement
gym to rehearse and to be cool. They sure heated things up on stage. That's Bill on banjo and Roman on mandolin.
That's Gene on fiddle, Larry on guitar, singing it out with Mary. Ran into our friend Sylvia, who had made the trek over
to Marshfield when we came for Claire Lynch. That Roman...what a guy. He brought us Claire Lynch and the Gibson
Brothers, and he sings and plays a mean mandolin as well. Thanks, Roman, for a most memorable evening.
It's this simple: we've pretty much heard 'em all. These guys are our all-time favorites. We've seen and enjoyed
the Gibson Brothers several times, but always in 45 minute sessions. This night, they were on stage for over
two hours. That's Eric Gibson in the middle, on guitar, though you usually see him with his banjo. Leigh is the
band's lead guitar and chief tormentor of his big brother Eric and his wayward, hard to keep in tune, banjo.
That's Mike on bass. He's been with the band from the beginning. Joe, on mandolin, came on
board a couple of years ago and already has his own cd out. Clayton is one of the finest fiddlers
we've ever heard. Oh, yeah, that's Eric with his more-familiar banjo. With the heat and the
humidity, keeping those instruments tuned was a constant effort, and we loved it.
For us, it was the perfect evening. We heard all of our favorite Gibson Brothers songs, we enjoyed their
company, and that of our friends, and we brought away some incredibly grand memories. They made us laugh,
they made us weep, and they made us so glad we were there when they came our way.
