Left Glendive this morning,
headed West...uh, North... what
state are we in, anyway. Oh,
Montana? Yep. Looks it.
Headed North on Highway 16 to the Ft. Union restoration...the river on
one side and bluffs on the other. Awesome!
After a "continental breakfast" (what
continent?) at the motel, we drove up to
Sidney(was this town named for Sherry's
brother?) and REAL eats at the M&M.
Sidney's still a great town, and
they even have signs to mark
their dips. Oughta do this in
Washington and Madison.
We finally made it to Fort
Union and were greeted by
some early settlers...this year's
crop of prairie dog pups.
In the mid-19th Century, Ft. Union was the largest
trading post North of St. Louis on the Missouri River.
The Army dismantled it to build Ft. Buford. The
restoration began about the time Jay left Montana.
Twenty-some years and a million-and-a half artifacts
later, it's been rebuilt on the original foundations.
Fort Union guides Dave Carr (left) and Ken
Anderson, repairing a tee pee, were very
hospitable and knowledgeable, and even
gave us some boiled coffee from the fireplace.
Just a few of the 1.5 million arftifacts the archeologists dug up.
Ken Anderson admonishing Jay not to make any "old
battleaxe" jokes around Sherry.
A model of the fort, the reveille canon, and
is Promise Farm missing a buffalo?
Farewell to Fort Union. What an
incredible thing they've done here!
On the road to
Bainville, MT -
a reminder to
always look up.
A rare bridge across the Missouri, until
fairly recently used by cars and trains.
Guess who had the right-of-way.
Still pumping oil in
the Williston Basin.
So, we hit a little rain...okay, a lot of rain...on the road to
Billings. 20 minutes earlier the temperature had been 78.
Wet and/or dry, we made it.
Tomorrow, we're sleeping in!
