September 1, 2011 SHAKE, RATTLE, & ROLL RUN Chapter 7 - On Top of Ol' Smoky

Jay: "I have so many memories of Lake Waccamaw.
Mom and Dad bought the lot, I think, when I was 12.
A builder put up the shell of the house, and Dad and I
finished the interior with knotty pine lumber. I taught
my baby brother, Chuck, how to swim, fish, operate
a boat, and water ski on this lake. It's five miles by
seven miles. I swam across it, the long way, when I
was fifteen, as I recall. It was our home for seven or
eight months of the year. Dad and I would commute
to school and/or work and hurry home for supper and
some lake time. Mom and Dad and Chuck are all
gone now. Somebody else owns the house. Our old
friend, Police Chief Tim Barrett, who saved my
mother's life, is gone, too. Many our other friends
are gone, as well. But the memories...they'll never go
away, as long as I live."
And it's always grand to be able to add delightful new memories to the old. And so
it is with the Lake Shore Lodge. Ted and Phyllis and their daughter, Kriste, were
warm and friendly hosts. If you're ever in the area, stop in. You'll love it.
One of the peculiarities of North Caroline geography is this: If you want to get to the
mountains from the Southeastern Beaches or Lake Waccamaw, you pretty much
have to go to South Carolina...All the way down to Darlington and Columbia, back up
Northwest to Spartanburg and Ashville, then on to Maggie Valley.
So we drove and drove and finally saw the signs we
were looking for: Clyde and Lake Junaluska. Towns
are used for post offices and do not necessarily
indicate where you're going. Sound familiar?
Lake Junaluska was our jumping off point, so we
jumped off, stopping at the Food Lion to lay in
provisions for our hideaway stay in the megaboonies.
And we do mean hideaway.
Here it is: our cabin in the wilderness. We felt a lot like Henry David Thoreau on
Walden Pond, although we were on Fine's Creek. No cell phone, no internet, only a
local telephone landline. There was a largely ignored satellite dish.
Signs, signs, all kinds of
signs, all over the place.
